Family Support Worker

THE JOB:  NCCS offers a variety of programs and services to children, youth, and families in Prince Rupert and the wider geographic area that includes Haida Gwaii. In collaboration with the Ministry of Children and Family Development, and working in the Family Skills – Out of Care Program under the supervision of Executive Director, the Family Support Worker (FSW) provides supports to parents, foster parents, and guardians in the development of life, parenting and social skills.  The FSP-OCP offers culturally appropriate activities and supports while supervising visits for parents whose children are in the care of MCFD.  The FSW assists the team to: 1. Develop, implement, evaluate, and modify client plans within program guidelines; 2. Identify potential risks; 3. Facilitate educational sessions, and problem-solving with clients related to parenting and family functioning prepare activity agendas and facilitate groups and individual sessions addressing specific social/life skills development goals; and 4. Evaluate effectiveness of intervention plans and solve programs as needed with supervisor.

  • Preferred experience working with the Supported Child Development or Aboriginal Supported Child Development program.

  • Complete the required documentation, including statistics, monthly and annual reports in a timely manner.

Position Overview

The Child & Youth Care Worker supports the inclusion of children and youth with identified developmental delays, disabilities, and/or neurodiverse needs into family and community life.  The purpose of the program is to promote behavioural change and personal growth in children and youth who are having difficulties coping as a result of social, emotional, physical, or cognitive delays. The CYCW provides individual intervention sessions, group programs and outreach services that are designed to increase community and life skills and enhance social networks. Specific supports provided include the development of child and youth-centered goal-focused plans for behavior management and social and life skills development.  The CYCW plays a significant role in supporting children and youth in the community by providing resources and information to child and youth serving organizations, schools and caregivers. Support is also provided to caregivers to manage challenging behaviours and other issues of concern as children transition through the teenage years and into adulthood.

Job Duties and Expectations

  • Receive, process, and prioritize referrals from related sources (e.g. families, school personnel, NCCS team members, MCFD CYSN Social Workers).
  • Identify client issues, needs and risks in order to develop and implement short-term, issue-specific intervention plans within program guidelines using a strengths-based approach.
  • Design, implement and evaluate child and youth-centered individual plans to aid in transitioning from childhood to youth to independence.
  • Plan and conduct individual and/or group sessions to promote skill building in identified need areas.
  • Ensure a safe, comfortable and welcoming environment for children and youth providing age-appropriate activities with adaptations as needed.
  • Provide life skills training as per goals set out by the child, youth and family.
  • Work within the community to utilize local resources and programs.
  • Participate in case conferencing as required.
  • Maintain accurate and current file records on all clients.
  • Consult with social workers, other professionals, and family when appropriate.
  • Participate in and contribute to regular staff meetings.
  • Flexibility is required to work a variety of shifts to accommodate appointments after school, in the evenings, and on weekends.
